When to Teach the Young Ones How To Ride Motorcycles and ATVs
Filed in archive ATV Safety on May 30, 2008
How old should your child be when they can start safely riding? There are too many variables to say for certain, including most importantly, your child's own agility and ambition to ride. The second most important issues to consider is your own judgement as to when you think the child will be responsible and safe enough to ride. You'll know if your child is ready.
When my eldest son was two he got his first electric quad. I knew he would be safe on it because before he got that, he had a Big-Wheel which he promptly rode out the back door, down two steps and over the bars. He knew where he was going, I'm sure of it. After a very brief cry he got right back on it and rode it straight out the back door again, and made it to the grass.

I agree on the fact that you should allow your child to decide when he/she is ready to get on the dirt. Some people I know have little ones that go on trips all the time with their parents and it is in their blood to ride because they are so accustomed to it. Others I know have forced their kids to ride and after they got their first broken arm from falling, decided never to ride again. Riding pretty much scared them that they are growing up as introverts and not enjoying the outdoors. I believe that watching your children get use to falls and getting the idea of standing back up on their own is the best way to learn to dirtbike.

I am a current blogger with similar pro-dirtbiking topics and added you to my blogroll. Hope you do the same!

I think it's important to measure your own child maturity and control. I have two kids and the older one is not as mature as my younger one. I trust the younger one more to be able to ride sooner.
