Very few states do not have ATV safety regulations in place
South Carolina is one of a few States in the US that does not currently have any laws in place that regulate ATV safety. It's not because they haven't tried, but Gov Mark Sanford vetoed bills for legislation in 2006 and 2007.
There are those that argue that there are too many things being controlled by the government already, and that more legislation is not wanted. While I tend to generally agree that less government is better, I still see daily reminders that people just don't get it when it comes to ATV safety. Or simple respect for that matter.
According to The Herald in South Carolina, they have introduced another bill to enact legislation similar to that used in No. Carolina, including helmets and eye protection, training, and something that makes more sense to me than age restrictions; size fits.
That is, instead of saying a kid that's 6 years old can only ride a 50cc quad, it should read that a kid under so many pounds should ride a 50cc quad. Kids vary in size from year to year. My 5 year old is almost as big as his 10 year old cousin and can more easily handle a 50cc quad right now, and will be physically able to handle a bigger quad than most kids his own age. Especially the older he gets.
