Schumacher Close to a Return with Mercedes
Filed in archive F1 Racing on December 20, 2009
Newly established team Mercedes, who recently bought over constructor Champions Brawn, are "close to a deal" with F1 legend Michael Schumacher.
This is the first news from a reputed source about a potential return in the new season for Schumacher. Ferrari president Luca di Montezelemolo has confirmed the rumour that was sparked by Eddie Jordan, BBC Sport pundit and ex-owner of Team Jordan.
A return in the place of injured Felipe Massa for Ferrari last season was ruled out by doctors who said his time away from the sport had aged his back and neck, telling the F1 world that it would be irresponsible of him to return without strengthening himself to former glories.
Mercedes have a lot to live up to with taking over Brawn GP, and this is a major risk to take. It is unsure, after Rubens Barrichello confirmed a move to Williams for next season, who the team will be. With this move, Barrichello has avoided driving with his old team-mate Schumacher, with whom he has made no secret of the fact he felt uncomfortable.
