Key Elements Part V: Assertive Predictability
Filed in archive ATV Safety , Learning , Motorcycle , Performance on February 12, 2007
One thing every rider must have is the ability to actively and aggressively see the world around them, and to make decisions based on that vision. That vision includes not only looking deep into a corner to hold your line, but also, and just as importantly, the ability to see what those around you intend to do. Effectively predicting what they will do before they do it.
It involves seeing people approach an intersection and knowing if they're going to stop or not. It involves looking in the side mirror of the car you're getting ready to pass on the freeway and knowing if they're going to suddenly change lanes without looking.
Being assertive while you ride, and predicting what others might do, may not always be easy, but looking for those situations and preparing for them will eventually pay dividends, even if it's just by chance that you got it right. Hopefully, you'll always be ready for those things and never have to actually react to them, but don't count on it.
