Kentucky.com reports that in 2006, Kentucky Children's Hospital saw some 80 kids involved in ATV accidents. Over half of those were under 17.
Of those, 85% were NOT wearing helmets. (yeah, I know, stop me if you've heard this.) I'm curious why they don't show the stats for how many were riding illegally, or how many were riding an ATV that was too big for them.
Statewide, Kentucky spent about $12.000,000.00 treating ATV related injuries in 2005. They don't say how much they made on registration fees, how much they made on land-usage fees, how much they collected on fines, etc etc, but I'd be willing to be it's many many times more than they've spent.
So chalk up another one for mis-information by the media.
