There were a group of 18 ATVers that got cited for riding illegally on public land to get to an area. Now they're being called martyrs. And they've got support from pike County jailer Rodney Scott, a Fishtrap ATV & Recreation Club member, (who, by the way, promised to "feed the men three meals a day if they are put in jail"), and Circuit Judge Steve Combs, who is urging residents to call their legislatures and get a trail authorized and to show support for the group of ATVers.

The road they were caught on was maintained by the county and as tax payers the men should have the same rights to the road as the horse people who hardly ever use it anymore. They are trying to get the county to lease a portion of strip mine property at the end of the road and do not want to ride on fish & wild life property. Harlan County does the same for its citizens and this would help until the inter-county trail system is put in place. They are experienced riders who will tell you where they ride is not safe for all and they want a safe regulated trail system for all atv riders and the sheriff and other officials are working with them to get some of the atv's off the county roads. They are all old and won't be riding anything but their hoverounds or power wheelchairs before long. Its not about them, its about cutting down on ATV deaths in a county that has the highest ATV deaths in the state. We have to get them a safe regulated place to ride before we start our efforts to get them off the highway and streets. Most of the politicians in Pike County would not support a Hells Angels type organization. This is more like the over the hill gang, look at their pictures. The Harlan County model they are looking for defeats them. There is no money in it for the people who sell insurance to the pay as you go system such as the one in WVA. You would lose your libility protection if you charged a fee under a county leased land system. These old men don't know that some of the people who they think are trying to help them is really opposed to the county leased atv property. They are at cross purposes for the people who want a fee based trail system in order to reap the profits from it. Such is life, a band of old men trying to get something for the community and cut down on atv deaths for our youth, being sold down the river without even having a clue.

support, and feedback we can get. This is not a laughing matter. These men did not set out to defy the law - they are all law-abiding, tax paying citizens. They have been trying for years to acquire a safe trail for all ATVers. Pike County, Ky. has been targeted as having high ATV accidents
and deaths and we are just trying to make riding ATV's in our county safe and enjoyable for all. Here's hoping the jailor doesn't have to feed them!!
