Badger State Trail, the "Rails to Trails" trail extending from Belleville, WI to the Illinois state line and includes the historic Stewart Tunnel will be open to ATVs for recreational use in Green County for the second of a three year trial period starting in December, according to a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announcement.
The trail will be open to ATVs only if snow is less than 4 inches deep, the snow cover has not been groomed for snowmobiling, the trail surface is frozen, the trail is closed for snowmobiling and temperatures are below 28 degrees.
The trail is always open to hiking and bicycling, which may or may not cause problems when snowmobiles and ATVs are on the trail at the same
The trial will remain open until March 31, 2008. Call the DNR info line at 608-527-2910 to find out what uses are allowed or prohibited on the trail on any given day this winter.
