ATV Types: Four Wheeled Quads

Four wheeled ATVs, known as quads or four-wheelers, were first made in the early 1980s and developed by Suzuki with a 125cc engine. By the mid 1980s Suzuki built a more high performance version of the ATV with a 250cc engine. The original quads had long suspension and 2-stroke engines with a manual transmission, and were built exclusively for recreational purposes.

There were also developments in utility ATVs in the mid 1980s, which featured four-wheel-drive and were much heavier than the sport quads. They are largely used for farming/ranching, or other work-related activities. Four-wheel-drive ATVs have been the most popular type of quad since their inception.
