Helmets are key to preventing injury during ATV accidents
Alberta, Canada's Transportation Minister, Luke Ouellette, is thinking about creating legislation that would require children to wear helmets while riding ATVs. As all three of my regular readers here at Under My Helmet know, helmets are key to preventing injury in the case of an ATV or motorcycle accident. Unfortunately, some folks don't know this, especially when it comes to their kids!
It's one thing to let your kid ride a bicycle without a helmet from time to time, I suppose. But letting them get on an ATV without one is simply irresponsible. In light of the fact that many parents won't protect their kids until they are threatened with fines, I reluctantly approve of regulations like this that are geared towards safety.
That, along with safety training, will go a long way in reducing the number of injuries. Education is important, but it doesn't work on everyone. Regulation will be important as well, but also will not work on everyone. Hopefully it will be enough to make a noticeable difference.
